Bird Watching
The abundance of birds in Quarry Hill Park provides a theater of color (with surround sound!) for novice and expert birders alike. The varied habitat, water sources, shelter and abundance of food make Quarry Hill a year round home for many species and a popular stop over for migratory birds.
Things to Note
- Binoculars & bird guides are available for checkout.
- Look for Orioles and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in May.
- Check out the 16 feeders around the building; Quarry Hill feeds the birds every day, year round.
- Get a heads up on recent bird sighting’s by checking the phenology board in the Nature Center before heading outdoors.
- Zumbro Valley Audubon Society holds a monthly guided bird walk the first Saturday of the month at 9:00 am.
Pro Tips
- Move slowly, be patient.
- Use good binoculars – 8 X 42 magnification is recommended.
- Black-capped Chickadees are tolerant of people and will let you get close.
- Look with the sun behind you to get better view of color.
- Pick up a bird checklist at the nature center – some birders keep a ‘life list’.
There are 10 bluebird houses that are monitored in the park. They can be seen in open meadow areas.
