2022-23 Registration Begins September 7

We welcome homeschool families to participate in our public programs and the following offerings designed specifically for homeschooled students. These classes are for homeschooled students only, are based on age, and are offered several times during the school year.

Class Details:

  • Classes include a significant amount of time outside. Please dress for the weather.
  • Advanced registration and payment is required. 
  • Parents do not need to stay. 
  • If your child has a particular educational/classroom need you must make Quarry Hill aware prior to the start date of class so we can be prepared to provide a successful experience for students.
  • Epi-Pens:  If your child requires an Epi-Pen and a responsible adult is not accompanying the child for the duration of the class an Epi-Pen authorization form (with physician anaphylaxis plan) must be completed and returned to Quarry Hill Nature Center prior to the start date. Please contact the Nature Center for more information.

Ages 5-7

Whose Clues (Ages 5-7) - September 20, 2022 - 1:30 - 3:00 PM
Students will compare a live snake to a toy snake, look for animals in soil, and hike to find clues about living things.  They will learn what all living things need to survive and some ways scientists group living things.
Fee = $8.00/student

Growing Up (Ages 5-7) - May 17, 2023 - 9:30 - 11:00 AM
This class focuses on animal’s lifecycles- how they are born and change as they become adults.  Through active learning situations, (puppet skits and 2 outside activities) students learn about various animal families and babies.

Ages 8-10

Bird Adaptations (Ages 8-10) - September 20, 2022 1:30 - 3:00 PM
This bird intensive class will have students observing birds with binoculars, live trapping birds, assisting with bird banding and understanding how habitat and bird adaptations are related.

Weather (Ages 8-10) - May 17, 2023 - 9:30 - 11:00 AM
Students will use various tools of meteorology to take measurements & predict the weather.  They will learn about human impacts on our “sea of air” and also how animals respond to weather & seasonal changes.

Ages 11-14

Aquatic Food Webs (Ages 11-14) -  September 20, 2022 1:30 - 3:00 PM
Students will use physical and chemical tests, as well as biological indicators, to determine if the Quarry Hill pond is “healthy”.  This class includes an examination of the fish life in the pond as they try their hand at fishing from the pond bridge as well.

Rock Climbing & Fossils (Ages 11-14) - May 17, 2023 - 9:30 - 11:00 AM
Students will be exposed to the geologic and human history of Quarry Hill Park and SE Minnesota as they hike to a limestone rock bed that was once a quarry operation. There, students will search for and identify fossils. After an introduction to proper climbing techniques and equipment, students will also have an opportunity to climb an outdoor limestone wall.
